Pair a Rain Barrel with a Tree Watering Bag

Capture runoff once, then slow-release at the root zone — the backyard water loop most hoses skip.

Pair a Rain Barrel with a Tree Watering Bag

Open-top watering and blast-from-the-hose both lose water to runoff and evaporation. A rain barrel plus a 20-gallon tree bag closes the loop: store storm water, dispense slowly where roots actually drink.

Step 1 · Capture from the downspout

Position the barrel on the dominant runoff side of the roof plane. Overflow should route away from the foundation — not into the basement window well.

Step 2 · Dispense from the brass spigot

Fill the tree bag directly from the spigot. No need for a pump on level yards if the bag sits below the barrel outlet.

Step 3 · Let the bag drip overnight

Slow release over 4–8 hours beats a five-minute flood. Young maples and street plantings especially benefit during July dry spells.
